No amount how blithely pop Dolly Parton's music became in the aboriginal Eighties, she was consistently a country babe at heart. Today it's the reverse: No amount how back-to-basics-country her contempo albums accept been, her affection still sparkles with beam and sequins. Dolly about invented the active Top Forty complete the Dixie Chicks are now accepted for, but her own pop albums are hit-or-miss. Too abundant of Backwoods Barbie, her boilerplate country comeback, comes off like the overproduced acidity of adolescent country ingénues who try to complete like Dolly Parton. And her awning of Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy" is Disco Dolly at her cheesiest. The best songs are the basic ones, like the appellation track, an old-fashioned, autobiographical folk carol about growing up poor and absent of getting pretty, alloyed with alabaster pedal animate guitar. Dolly earns an added half-star for the cool pun in "Better Get to Livin'" that alone she could get abroad with: "Well, I'm not the Dalai Lama/But I'll try to action up a few words of advice." If she asked the Dalai Lama, he'd apparently admonish that artlessness is the key to acceptable country music in the avant-garde world.
